Lingtu secures US$30 Million in New Funding
Gobi Partners Leads Oversubscribed Round
Lingtu Strengthens its Leadership in Digital Mapping and Location-Based Services in China
Beijing — May 23, 2006
Lingtu, China’s leading digital mapping and location-based services (LBS) company, today announced that it has closed a US$30 million round in financing.  Gobi Partners led the funding round, which also included Oak Investment Partners, Miven Venture Partners, AllianceBernstein, Georgian Pine Investments and bScope Partners.  “This powerful syndicate of investors will help Lingtu build upon its commanding market share in China,” said Thomas G. Tsao of Gobi Partners.  “They also bring the experience and track record to help the Company expand regionally.”
The financing will be used to further grow Lingtu’s mapping, software, marketing, sales and R&D teams.  Significant resources will be deployed to continue increasing the coverage, level of detail and accuracy of Lingtu’s mapping and geospatial database – China’s biggest and most comprehensive.  “We have maps for all of China’s 337 cities,” said Tang Ningzhe, CEO of Lingtu.  “We are on a relentless mission to finish mapping out China’s countryside, its ever expanding road network and the exploding amount of points of interest and addresses.  Lingtu will also stay ahead of the curve and transition to dynamic three dimensional maps.”
The funding will also further boost Lingtu’s innovation leadership to deliver new LBS technologies and services to the market such as: SmartGuider – Lingtu’s award winning personal navigation software;www.51ditu.com– a leading map portal for Internet search; VR Map – a ground-breaking 3D-GIS software solution; and Map Star – a GPS tracking service provided by China Unicom.  The Company will actively expand its enterprise client base which includes leading players in such vertical markets as automotive, government, logistics, transportation, telecom, and utilities.
“The demand for high quality digital maps is experiencing significant growth,” said Bandel Carano, Managing Partner of Oak Investment Partners.  “Of all the players in China, Lingtu has emerged as the only one with the unique vision and all the elements in place to successfully connect the Internet, mobile users, vehicles and objects.”
Profitable since 2001, market demand for Lingtu’s products and services has reached an inflection point as revenue and EBITDA in Q1 2006 grew by more than 300% and 500%, respectively, year-over-year.  “The Company’s strong business momentum is a testament to senior management’s strategic planning and execution,” said Victor Tsao, founder of Linksys and senior partner of Miven.  “This is one of the most seasoned operating teams in China.”
The Company also reached a number of critical milestones.  Lingtu’s popular CD-ROM has now surpassed three million desktop PC users.  Its SmartGuider product will be distributed through Digital China’s national network and will be pre-installed on a number of new navigation devices due out in September.  Lingtu has also won a number of new contracts to supply maps and software to leading portals and telecom operators such as China Mobile.
“We continue to be impressed by Lingtu’s leadership and its value proposition for customers,” said Jamie Kiggen, Senior Vice President of AllianceBernstein.  “Lingtu has demonstrated that it can execute on its vision, and we are enthusiastic about the company’s future.”
According to estimates, the global digital mapping and LBS-related industries may reach more than US$50 billion in revenues by 2008.  "The Chinese digital mapping sector has the potential to be the world’s largest market" said Richard Chang, an advisor to Gobi Partners and Managing Partner of Georgian Pine Investments.  "As a complete solutions provider from databases to applications, Lingtu is well positioned to capitalize on this growth."
